Fly: An Urban Art Experience Center by Kris Lin

Award-Winning Design Inspired by Flight Over Water

In the heart of the Yangtze River Delta urban economic planning zone, a unique architectural marvel has taken flight. Inspired by the concept of flight over water, Kris Lin's 'Fly' is a testament to the city's development and the leap of urban art experiences.

The project, located in Jiangyin city, is an urban art experience center that utilizes its geographical location to its advantage. The natural elements of the Yangtze River are introduced into the pool landscape, creating a symbiotic relationship with water. The building, built around a landscape pool, resembles a pair of flying wings, symbolizing the city's development and take-off in the Yangtze River basin.

What sets 'Fly' apart from other designs is its unique cantilevered structure. From the outside, no column net is visible, giving the impression of a pair of flying wings. The exterior material is a blend of white and gray aluminum plate with beige marble. Through the interweaving of the body block, a sense of spatial permeability is created, blurring the boundaries between the inner and outer space, while simultaneously creating a variety of functional spaces.

The design process involved a meticulous combination of architecture, interior, landscape, and soft design. The central waterscape is designed with a quiet path running through the multi-functional display experience area. The entire design concept revolves around the theme of flying over the water surface, creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture.

Despite the challenges faced in creating a building that resembles a pair of flying wings, the design team, led by Kris Lin and Jiayu Yang, successfully overcame them. The cantilever structure and the turning and interweaving of the body block posed significant challenges, but the team managed to create a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional.

The 'Fly' project began in April 2018 in Jiangyin, China, and was completed in August 2019. It was exhibited in Jiangyin, China, in the same month. The project is a testament to the advanced Yangtze River Economic Belt and the economic development planning zone in East China. It was awarded the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2020, a prestigious award granted to outstanding and trendsetting creations.
